Lithuanian youth action „For decent work“ this year took place in Kaunas

On Wednesday, 7 of October, Youth organizations of three Lithuanian Trade Union Centres: Lithuanian Trade Union Confederation youth association „LPSK Jaunimas“, National Youth Trade Union „Solidarumas“ and Lithuanian Labour Federation youth organization celebrated World Day for Decent Work and made public event. Event took place in one of the biggest Lithuanian cities - Kaunas.

According youth information, they hired trolley buss and drove through Kaunas city. Also they suggested people on popular routes to take a ride home for free. In stops and in trolley bus they provided information for people about decent work and Trade Unions. For that they made leaflets, posters. All members wore T-shirts with post I am Trade Union member. What about you?. Also youth reminded about workers rights, asked people about their problems they face at their working places, talked about Trade Unions activities.

This event initiator International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC) says, that decent work problem is important in all world, because when we talk about decent work we have in mind a lot: migration; discrimination; forced labour; equality; human trafficking; child work and other core labour standards, such as right to negotiate and right to join unions, right to express the opinion; the laws and agreements; informal economy; climate change problem; health and safety; social security; poverty and lack of food; social dialogue and etc.“.

This event was complemented with Lithuanian Trade Union Confederation‘s Kaunas region centre and „Fellesforbudet“ (Norwegian Trade Union) jointly made documentary movie "Ar tu pasirengęs dirbti legaliai?" (Are you ready to work legally?). Movie was shown on national television on 7 of October, 14:05.

Last year youth organizations celebrated WDDW in capital of Lithuania, Vilnius. They made press conference, trolley went through densely populated areas. Last year this action received much attention from people, press and authorities. Therefore this year was decided to repeat this ride, only to spread information in other city. Public transport was chosen, because it‘s the best way to reach working people. Action usually last from 16 to 19 - that is time when a lot of workers travel home.

In future we hope that Decent Work trolley (or bus) could become a tradition and spread information about workers rights and decent work all over country.
