OCTOBER 7: WORLD DAY FOR DECENT WORK

Dear Friends, The World Day for Decent Work on October 7 is a unique and unprecedented opportunity for the international trade union movement to mobilize in a truly global way to advance our agenda. Fulfilling the key decision of the ITUC Founding Congress to organize this Day will be a major test of the capacity and commitment of the trade union movement on international issues, and thus it will require every ITUC affiliate to organize an activity or activities and to inform us of these so that we can together demonstrate the global nature of the Day .

With less than 30 days remaining until the Day, affiliates from all over the world have been sending in the information on their plans for the Day; however, many organizations have yet to do so.

It is now urgent that those organizations that have not done so either send the information to the ITUC, or upload it directly onto the special website at www.wddw.org.

Attached is a list of the affiliates that already have reported their actions and events to us, as at Monday 8 September. The wddw.org website contains the up-to-the-minute list of actions that have been reported.

BEFORE OCTOBER 7:

Report in your actions! Many different kinds of actions are being organized, ranging from full-scale national mobilizations involving activities in workplaces and public spaces, through to cultural events, workshops and seminars, media activities and actions via the internet. It is vital for the success of the Day that you report your actions to us so we can put them on the

Google map on wddw.org, or you create your own account and put them there yourself (follow the instructions under the link “Report your actions” on the website). Publicity materials, videos, posters, etc. that have been received from affiliates are also being posted onto the site as we receive them.

Campaigning material – now also posters Under the “Action tool” section on www.wddw.org you can find different kinds of tools to help you promote the day. There are the logos in 16 languages (just send an email or fax if you want it in your language!), some illustrations that you can use when making your own materials, the brochure on the Day, a Mini Action Guide on Decent Work and now, also, there are three different posters in English, Spanish, French and German. You can also use the electronic templates of the posters and make your own versions, for instance, by adding your own logo.

The website also includes background information on Decent Work and publicity materials. If you don’t have the possibility to download these from the Internet, just contact us, and we will ensure that you get the material in the way you want. If you are producing objects or materials, please send us a sample for our information if possible.

When you are producing material for October 7, please include the ITUC and WDDW logos where appropriate. You can download both from the wddw.org web site.

Press and media Many organizations are planning to publicise October 7 in their national media, and we encourage all affiliates to do so. The ITUC will release a general press release a couple of days before October 7, and will send out global media advisories in the weeks leading up to it. Please let us know about your media activities and send in your press releases, articles, etc. once they are finished. We will put all the press releases we get in our press room on the web site. If you are planning media connections, please contact Press Officer Mathieu Debroux to synchronize the activities: Mathieu Debroux:

DURING OCTOBER 7

Statement Shortly there will be a short statement published on the World Day for Decent Work website. You can use the statement in any way you want: as a basis for your information or press releases, or to use as part of your actions, to read it out during rallies, etc.

Follow the actions on Internet – send us videos and photos! It will be possible to follow the actions during the Day itself on wddw.org, from the break of dawn in the Pacific to night-fall in the Americas. We will tell you more about how to follow the actions later, closer to the Day itself. But in order for us to make it possible for people to know what is happening, we need your help! So please prepare to send us messages, videos, photos and endorsements from the events in your country as the Day unfolds.

More information or materials: Send in your action plans or questions to: wddw@ituc-csi.org
