To mark the 4th World Day for Decent Work, SOLIDAR is organising a two-day domestic workers’ tour to call on Members of the European Parliament and Government representatives to support and promote the ratification and the implementation of the ILO Domestic Workers Convention (C 189).

This landmark Convention sets out that domestic workers around the world who care for families and households must have the same basic labour rights as those available to other workers. If ratified and implemented, it will improve the working and living conditions of the estimated 100 million domestic workers worldwide (the majority of whom are women).

With this event, SOLIDAR will bring together MEPs, domestic workers representatives and labour organisations around 2 key moments:

12:00 - 14:30 - Round Table “Domestic Workers: From Modern Slavery to Equal Rights” Hear the stories of domestic workers’ representatives from Myrtle Witbooi (SADSAWU – South Africa), Leddy Mozombite (SINTTRAHOL - Peru) (tbc) and a Filipino worker in Italy (tbc) about the conditions of domestic workers in their countries, how the ILO Domestic Workers Convention (C 189) can change these conditions and why Europe should spearhead its ratification and implementation process.

From 14:30 - Open space Photo opportunity for MEPs willing to express their support to the ratification of the ILO C189. Also, watch short films on Filipino domestic workers in Italy and Andean agricultural workers in Spain; view the SOLIDAR migration & development exhibition; pick up more reading materials about migrant domestic workers and migration & development issues.
