Thailand

  • City where the action takes place: Bangkok
  • Level of the action: Regional
  • Name of the organisation: WSM
  • Contact person: Fedra Vanhuyse - fedra.wsmasia@gmail.com

From October 4 to 6, 2011, the garment federations C.CAWDU Cambodia, Garteks Indonesia, NGWF Bangladesh, NGWU Nepal and the Belgian NGO WSM joined forces in a garment network workshop in Bangkok, Thailand. Purpose of the event was to discuss the situation in the Asian garment industry and the actions of garment federations to address problems of workers. The campaign on short-term contracting was presented to the International Labour Organisation Asia Pacific Regional Office. The campaign: Short-term contracting is on the rise - workers under short-term contracts cannot join a union, are not covered by collective bargaining agreements, don’t have benefits or social security and are easily exploited. It’s also a strategy to undermine the strength of trade unions. Join our campaign and demand:
- short-term contract workers can join a union (ILO convention no. 87 and no. 98)
- social protection (ILO convention no. 102) is applied to all workers
- short-term contract workers receive the same salary and benefits accorded to permanent workers performing the same job (ILO convention no. 100)
- the contract and salary slips are set up according to national labour law and all workers get a copy of their contract and salary slips (ILO recommendation no. 198)
