As many as one in four people working in public services in the UK – around 1.2 million – are employed by contractors. These ’hidden’ workers are often trapped in low-paid, insecure jobs where being badly treated is a normal part of working life. Many are migrant workers.
They are vulnerable because many are migrant workers who are afraid and can be easily exploited. Yet they are less likely than any other group of workers to have trade union representation.
UNISON has been running an organising camapign amongst these workers for the past year. This event will celebrate the work of these activists, shocase their diversity and press home UNISON’s campaign for a Living Wage.
