World Day for Decent Work

WDDW 2008

The first ever World Day for Decent Work on October 7 last year was a huge success. Hundreds of thousands of people took part in rallies, marches, public events, seminars, cultural and media events and other activities in countries across the globe.

The international trade union movement’s demand for fundamental transformation of globalisation was heard loud and clear around the world, and for many of those who took part, it was their first ever direct involvement in a coordinated international trade union action. Many affiliates linked the global mobilisation to issues of pressing importance in their own countries, increasing its impact and relevance to the immediate concerns of working people.

Events took place in 130 countries, 216 affiliates carried out activities and 79 other organisations including non-ITUC affiliated trade unions also organised events. A total of 616 different activities were reported to the ITUC.
