Burma (ITUC report) (PDF - 217.6 kb) Rich pickings: how trade and investment keep the Burmese junta alive and kicking In September 2007, the Burmese people mobilised their largest social and political uprising since 1988. Thousands of monks and ordinary people marched to protest grinding poverty and the country’s repressive military dictatorship. The resulting crackdown by the regime was news all over the world: it is believed that at least 110 people were killed and thousands were hurt by rubber bullets, tear gas, bamboo clubs and rubber batons.

Putting a number on job quality? (PDF - 616 kb) Report from ETUI-REHS in pdf-format. The ETUI-REHS research department seeks to contribute to this aim by creating a European Job Quality Index (JQI). The European JQI is compiled on the basis of six sub-indices that capture different aspects of job quality: wages, non-standard forms of employment, work-life balance and working time, working conditions and job security, access to training and career advancement, and collective interest representation and participation. This working paper describes the choice of data and variables as well as the data processing, and it details a number of important data restrictions and caveats that need to be taken into account when interpreting the results of the JQI. The ETUI-REHS Job Quality Index is intended as an important and ongoing contribution to the debate about ‘more and better jobs’ in Europe.

Union View: Albania (PDF - 3.6 Mb) Union View is an ITUC publication. Against the background of rock bottom export prices and indecent wages, thousands of Albanian children are faced with serious difficulties keeping up with school. What are Albanian teachers’ unions doing to keep children in school, or to bring them back, including those from the discriminated Roma minority?

Union View: Burkina Faso (PDF - 753.7 kb) Union View is an ITUC publication. How can new forms of solidarity and social protection be adapted to the needs of informal economy workers? Having founded five sectoral trade unions, a forum for social dialogue and a mutual fund, Burkina Faso’s unions are gradually demarginalizing the informal economy. Reports and firsthand accounts.

Union View: Cambodia (PDF - 865.5 kb) Union View is an ITUC publication. International pressure has helped improve working conditions in textile factories. But union rights are still being violated with the connivance of the authorities, which have even sentenced some innocent people to prison. The 20,000 women being exploited to sell beer are getting no protection from the government either, but are trying to organise themselves in unions.

Union View: Guatemala (PDF - 766.8 kb) Union View is an ITUC publication. Grinding poverty and the explosion of the informal economy, harsh working conditions in the maquilas, sexual and racial discrimination... more than ten years after the signing of the 1996 Peace Accords, life for workers in this Central American country is still very difficult, as impunity, corruption and the assassination of trade unionists become dangerously commonplace.

Union View: Guinea (PDF - 2.3 Mb) Union View is an ITUC publication. By successfully mobilising vigorous elements within the country in early 2007, the unions generated immense hope among a population that has always been denied democracy. More than eight months after the general strike was brutally put down, with much bloodshed, the challenge facing the unions now is to keep firmly closed ranks and capitalise on their popularity to get the country embarking on reforms as quickly as possible.

Union View: Jordan (PDF - 1.2 Mb) Union View is an ITUC publication. What is the international trade union movement doing to defend and organise migrant workers better, given that they are exploited and suffer numerous forms of abuse? A focus on Jordan, with interviews in construction sites, with women domestic workers, and in textile companies, where unions are organising migrants to protect their basic rights.

Union View: Marocco (PDF - 3.7 Mb) Union View is an ITUC publication. The UMT Women’s Committee has gone into action, battling with the socio-economic and cultural obstacles that undermine the role of women in society, in the labour market and trade unions. An initial assessment and testimonies of the progress made so far.
